What our students think
"My experience of the course so far has been positive. The content has increased my clinical understanding of a variety of ophthalmic and medical conditions, how these present, what the possible implications are, and how this impacts on patients. It has helped me to relate better to my patients and I feel in a stronger position to provide them with advice. I like the structure of the course and have felt well supported by the University and staff. The time commitment and transition back to study was initially a bit daunting but I believe it has improved my skills in prioritisation, time management and critical appraisal. The initial feeling of pressure has definitely been outweighed by what I feel I have gained from the course, professionally and personally. I have also been promoted at work - I am sure doing postgraduate study helped with this!"

"I would say, the MMedSci program at Sheffield University has provided a great opportunity of learning and continuing education for clinicians like me who want to carry on with their clinical practice as well as don't want to get behind in learning latest knowledge and current trends of profession. Being off-campus, this course blends very well with the clinical routine and one can still fulfil the dream of pursuing higher education. I'm proud on saying that this course has proved to be a great source of learning advanced research, up-to-date knowledge and various new practical skills which I could incorporate in my clinical practice for wider benefits of patients and has definitely enhanced my knowledge and clinical approach."

"After being accepted on to the MMedSci course I attended the first residential with trepidation as I had not undertaken any significant study for many years. The helpfulness, warmth and enthusiasm of all the staff, including Sheena and Robin was evident from the first day and continued throughout the course.
The first module proved to be the most difficult for me as I found it difficult to read through and understand the complexity of the articles, and hadn’t realised that the units had many sections, I spent around 10 hours in the first week reading around the subject to realise I had only answered the first part of the first unit! However, I soon got used to reading more efficiently and this is a skill which has helped me enormously in my current post.I wanted to do the course for personal as well as professional development and have thoroughly enjoyed learning about developments in knowledge that were lacking when I trained as an orthoptist, although I had generally kept up to date, and have a great deal of clinical experience this course has made a huge difference to my clinical understanding of complex issues enhancing my confidence to support and lead my team.
I really would like to thank all involved in the course and say that I will really miss being part of it, you may well see me back on one of the stand-alone modules!"

"I've really enjoyed the Low Vision Module and am looking forward to becoming a low vision practitioner in my department. I found the course content extremely interesting to study - some of it was a refresher of information learnt during my Orthoptics degree and some of it was completely new to me. The online course delivery really suited my learning around my work. I was apprehensive about the work load, and particularly the clinical exam but found it manageable with "little and often" amounts of work and actually really enjoyed the clinical exam once I got going! It's so nice to be able to put all the new skills you develop into practice. I would definitely recommend the course to anyone with a special interest in visual impairment - as long as you can keep up with the work load. The introductory study day was fascinating and there's so much help and support available from Charlotte and the other staff. It's been really enjoyable to go back to studying and I've learnt so much - hopefully this will really benefit my department and my patients - Thank you!"
