Course description
In the first year we teach you the basics of business management including behaviour at work, accounting, quantitative methods, marketing, strategic management, business ethics and economics.
With your core knowledge base founded in year one, you'll have the confidence to start thinking about employability and your career, even at this early stage.
This course offers a huge amount of flexibility after your first year, which means you can really tailor the course to your career aspirations. Modules vary from the creative to the technical but all are relevant to the modern workplace and are taught by leaders in their fields.
Topics include international marketing, organisational psychology, strategy, operations management, law, statistics, business intelligence, human resources, corporate governance, entrepreneurship, digital marketing, industrial relations, consumer psychology, creativity and innovation, and decision sciences. You can choose to specialise in a particular area of business, or keep your options open with a wide range of subjects.
We teach many modules through case studies, so you benefit from the subject matter being put in a real-world context. We also have strong relationships with businesses and alumni. This means you'll have the opportunity to learn from, and network with, professionals in a range of sectors.
You can apply to spend a semester abroad through the University's Erasmus+ scheme.
Financial help from the University - bursaries
If you're a UK student, you could be entitled to a University bursary. A bursary is the same as a grant - you don't have to pay it back.

We balance a rigorous academic foundation with practical skills to ensure you are ready for the world of work.
We want you to develop skills so you can apply course content in a company setting. Our degrees combine real-world application with the most contemporary business thinking, and because our academics are world-leading researchers, your education will draw on the most current management theories.
Our courses are very practice-orientated, so guest lectures are a regular fixture. We've introduced cutting-edge technologies into our learning and teaching, including software such as PeerWise and Aropa.
We want you to be informed, innovative and proactive and do everything we can to support and enhance your career, steering you in the right direction with all the knowledge and skills you require.
At the heart of our building is our Employability Hub. Here you can book appointments with our in-house careers advisors and sign up for workshops on topics from CV writing to interview techniques. In the Hub you can look for internships, placements (either short term or a year in industry), part-time roles and volunteering opportunities. You'll get advice from our dedicated team on how to apply.
Through our links with employers, you'll also have the chance to take part in drop-in Q&A sessions and workshops delivered by experts from world leading organisations.
What our graduates do
We have a dedicated Employability Hub where you can access careers support, find job or placement opportunities, and develop essential skills through workshops with industry experts. You're supported throughout your course and for up to three years after you graduate.
Sheffied University Management School careers
Accounting and financial management
Employers recognise and value the practical work-ready skills that our students develop. Recent graduates are working for Barclays, Deloitte, Grant Thornton, KPMG and Santander.
Many students pursue traditional accounting roles, but an increasing number are working in banking, finance, audit, assurance and consultancy.
Business management
At the Management School, we work with businesses and organisations to ensure the content of our courses is up-to-date and relevant, and that the skills and experience students gain meet the demands of future employers.
Student profile
"We've got a really good mix of lecturers and seminar tutors. All of them have industry experience and you've got the best academics from around the world. If you're learning about entrepreneurship, for example, you're learning from people who've done it themselves; they've started up businesses, they've helped other businesses, you've got ex-consultants."
Matt Kempson
Sheffield University Management School
Many students at Sheffield University Management School choose to do a placement year, or year in industry.
You can add a placement year (sometimes called a year in industry) to your course after you arrive at Sheffield. Placements are taken between your second and final year of study and we add 'Degree with Employment Experience' to your course title to reflect your time in the workplace.
A placement year is an excellent opportunity to apply what you've learnt in your course and gain invaluable workplace experience. You'll develop a range of transferable skills and become more commercially aware.
Placements are paid. While it's up to you to apply for a placement (the placement isn't guaranteed) we'll do everything we can to help.
You'll be paid a salary: in the range of £13,000 to £25,000. Some big corporates are starting to see it as an extended selection process for their graduate training schemes.
Previous students have undertaken placements at Accenture, PwC, L'Oreal, Disney, Rolls-Royce, Microsoft, Santander and Marks and Spencer, as well as less well-known companies.
