Objectives

This module aims to equip students to identify barriers to the inclusion of diverse and underserved groups in research, and to plan appropriate actions to promote the inclusion of these groups. 


Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Explain what inclusive research is
  • Describe why inclusive research is important
  • Identify relevant groups who should be included in research
  • Propose methods to include diverse and underserved groups in research
  • Plan where in the research cycle to include diverse and underserved groups
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate with diverse and underserved groups
  • Formulate actions to improve the inclusivity of research

Teaching methods

The module will be delivered online using a variety of methods including online lectures, presentations by researchers and members of diverse and underserved groups, formative learning activities and self-study. The topics covered will include a range of approaches to improving inclusion in research from patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) to co-production of research. We will consider how these different approaches can be used in a range of research designs to promote inclusivity throughout the research cycle.

The content of our courses is reviewed annually to make sure it is up-to-date and relevant. Individual modules are occasionally updated or withdrawn. This is in response to discoveries through our world-leading research, funding changes, professional accreditation requirements, student or employer feedback, outcomes of reviews, and variations in staff or student numbers. In the event of any change we'll consult and inform students in good time and take reasonable steps to minimise disruption.
