A Winning InfographicFeeding_the_mind_300pixels

Ellen Lee, a medical statistician within the DTS section, was part of the winning team who took first prize in a national infographic competition in May 2014.

The team of four took up the British Library and Research Councils UK challenge to create a visualisation of RCUK’s ‘Gateway to Research’ database; a new online portal that enables anyone to access information on research funded by the seven UK Research Councils. The challenge was to present complex data in a compelling way that anyone could understand.

Ellen, along with Liam Maxwell (UoS), Simon Wilkins (UoS) and Tim Butcher (BDP) won the non-professional category with their infographic, ‘feeding the public mind’. They searched for projects and data that related to understanding the human mind and brain, and displayed these using the model of a brain, alongside wider research summaries. The aim of the infographic was to visualise the depth and breadth of information available through the GtR portal, and to inspire others to explore the GtR database for themselves.

Liam Maxwell, project manager for the team and a member of the Department of Human Communication Sciences said: “We can’t believe that a project that started off as a bit of fun amongst friends has gained this kind of recognition. It’s just great to know that this is what the judges were looking for and that they really like it.”
