Admissions team gears up for a busy summer
If spring is in the air it can only mean one thing to those of us who work in university admissions: planning for the summer! We’re testing computer systems, checking rooms and lining up phones in readiness for the Confirmation, Adjustment and Clearing processes in August.
Clearing has always been an exciting time of year, but in recent years it’s become even more interesting. First there was the introduction of Adjustment, allowing students who meet and exceed the terms of their firm offers to look for a place elsewhere. Then there was the lifting of the cap on universities’ recruitment of students with higher A level grades, and the greater flexibility consequent upon that. Add in the fact that there are fewer eighteen-year-olds in the population and it’s clear that the balance has shifted: universities are now courting students more than ever before. In 2013 there were more universities than ever involved in Clearing and Adjustment, and 2014 is likely to be similar.
Lynsey Hopkins, Head of Admissions at the University of Sheffield commented: “We know that students are keen to come to the University of Sheffield, but we’re not resting on our laurels. Last year we launched the ‘Go Higher’ campaign, which encouraged students who were considering other options in the run-up to results to register their interest in us in early August. On results day, these students were one step ahead of the many thousands of other students across the country looking for alternative places. It was a successful scheme which we’ll be running again this year. “
Of course, most students who get into their firm or insurance choice university will be delighted to go there. But for others, whether they have done better than they thought or missed out on both choices, it’s comforting to know that there are great options out there in August. For those who are willing to do their research and pick up the phone, there’s never been a better time to get the place they want. We will be waiting for their calls!
