There are four exciting positions for Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering at the University of Sheffield. We are looking for innovative and visionary researchers in the broad areas of Systems and Control, Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy and Complex Systems who have a demonstrable track record and can develop, lead and sustain research of international standard.

You will hold a PhD in a relevant subject area or have equivalent experience.  You will also have experience of leading and managing independent research and the ability to develop cross-disciplinary collaborations. In addition to establishing and maintaining a world-class research profile through high-quality research publications, research grant income and impact generation, the postholder will be expected to make a significant contribution to the department’s undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes and to the supervision of PhD students.

The Department is the only university department in the UK and one of the best in the world dedicated to automation and systems engineering. It was also ranked 1st in the UK for research output in the Research Excellence Framework 2014. The successful candidate will join an innovative, dynamic and ambitious department that is committed to the highest standards of research and teaching and is renowned for fostering multidisciplinary research activities involving partners from academia as well as major industry players such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Siemens and AstraZeneca.

Our research and knowledge-based activities are aligned with the future demands of both business and and society. We seek to develop innovative solutions to address challenges in a diverse range of application fields from Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing to Life Sciences and Healthcare, Energy and Environment. We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development. We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to the greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience. The Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering holds a Bronze Athena SWAN award in recognition of our commitment to equality and diversity.

Research Associate in Evolutionary Multi-Objective Optimisation for Manufacturing Systems.  In this project we will build platform technologies, comprising advanced chemical reactors underpinned by computational intelligence, which can scale up production of advanced nanoparticle products (polymer nanoparticles and quantum dots) without loss in the precise control over structural dimensions which are achieved in research laboratories. We will build autonomous laboratory reactors which can be programmed to monitor the nanoparticle formation process in real time and relate conditions to the particle properties. Throughout the manufacturing process, machine learning algorithms will direct the reactors towards achieving the desired specification through 'self-optimisation' of conditions. This will require a relationship between data obtained in the lab experiments and the product specification to be elucidated. We will take the optimised laboratory nanoparticle formation processes and demonstrate scale-up in several manufacturing environments, including R&D process laboratories and manufacturing facilities at our partner’s sites.

Whilst attached to NanoMan, you will also be joining a highly active and stimulating group of researchers in the Department of Automatic Control & Systems Engineering. We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.
