Children in lab at microscopes

Outreach activities

In 1904, The University of Sheffield promised the people of Sheffield "The University will bring the highest education within the reach of the child of the working man". In the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences we are as committed as ever to fulfilling that promise. For this reason, we have active schools and families outreach programmes, in which we aim to inspire children by showing them that science is exciting and accessible to all.

What do we offer?

We welcome visits from primary schools on our 'Be a Scientist for the Day' programme, and we run events such as our 'Schools Christmastime Lecture' in the Octagon Centre. We also run 'Discovery Night' events in the Alfred Denny Building during British Science Week. Come along and join in.

Contact us to discuss options

If you would like to bring your class on a 'Be a Scientist for the Day' visit to the Department, please contact us.  We run visit days during the second half term of the summer. We will answer any questions and can arrange a site visit for you to look at our lab and museum and discuss with us the theme(s) and details of your visit.
