Dr Howe completed his Batchelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Sheffield in 2012. Following this, he undertook Dental Foundation Training in Sheffield and Dental Core Training posts (years 1-3) in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Radiology in South Yorkshire. During this time, he obtained Membership to the Faculty of Dental Surgery (RCS Edinburgh).

Dual qualifying in medicine, he completed his Batchelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Liverpool graduating in 2019. He then completed Academic Foundation Doctor Training in Yorkshire working in General Surgery, Geriatric Medicine, Orthopaedics and General Medical Practice. During this period, Dr Howe was a co-investigator on the Oxford/AstraZeneca ChAd0x1 nCoV-19 vaccine trial. 

Dr Howe was appointed as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Oral Medicine in Sheffield in 2021. His research interests are focused on finding therapeutic solutions to treat precancerous conditions that affect the mouth. He teaches Oral Medicine in the Undergraduate BDS program at the University of Sheffield. 

Research interests

My research is focused on treating oral epithelial dysplasia and other precancerous conditions that affect the mouth, by developing novel drug delivery solutions for the oral mucosa.

Teaching activities

Dr Howe has completed a postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (Anglia Ruskin University) and has obtained a Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy. He teaches the third and fifth-year BDS Human Diseases modules.

He has taught internationally on an RCS MFDS revision webinar series for the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. He is the joint coordinator for the National Oral Medicine FIT Teaching Program.
