Taster afternoon for Electronic and Electrical Engineers of the future

Following a successful debut earlier in the year The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering are running another Taster Session on Thursday 21st May for Y12 students who are considering their university choices.

Lab session with Y12s on EEE taster day

The afternoon session which starts at 2:30pm will consist of a mini lecture delivered by Dr. Gavin William focusing on white light emitting diodes which have replaced traditional light bulbs in homes and businesses due to their improved efficiency.

Dr. Williams will discuss how semiconductors are manufactured in clean rooms where air is filtered to make it extremely clean as these devices are so small that dust particles will adversely affect their performance.  We are extremely proud that we have a teaching clean room in The Diamond that our first and second years use.  Find out more about this resource by watching the video below.

The mini lecture will also cover the electrical and optical characteristics of LEDs and discuss what the next generation of LEDs could look like.  There will then be an interactive question and answer session to allow the students to ask any electronic and electrical engineering questions they may have.
