Dr Rola Saad
Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering
Profile

I have been awarded my PhD degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 2019.

My EPSRC funded research project was focused on the design and modelling of miniaturised multiband electromagnetic periodic metamaterial structures for small antenna applications. Electromagnetic metamaterial structures are unique engineered materials of peculiar properties not available in nature.

Two distinctive properties of these material are its ability to supress surface waves and exhibit total internal reflection, which make it highly desirable for applications including antennas, communication systems, microwave and RF engineering.

Therefore, my research interests and experience fall within the scope of RF and communication engineering as related to antenna and metamaterial characterisation, modelling and measurements.

Prior to my PhD, I have obtained my MSc degree from the University of Glamorgan in 2006, with distinction. My first degree was a BEng in Electrical Engineering, Communications and Electronics, which was awarded at a GPA of 89.3% from Beirut Arab University (BAU) in 2003.

I am a member of the IEEE and the IEEE Women in Engineering. In 2018, I became the Associate Fellow of the Higher Education.

Qualifications
  • PhD (Electronic Engineering-Communications), University of Sheffield 2019
  • MSc (Electronic Mobile Communications), University of Glamorgan 2006
Research interests
  • Multiband metamaterial/metasurfaces
  • Miniaturised electromagnetic metamaterial characterisation
  • Antenna miniaturisation

Teaching interests

My teaching philosophy is focused on implementing forward thinking teaching methods and techniques to inspire and empower young engineers.

With my current role as a University Teacher, at the University of Sheffield, I am particularly interested in implementing my teaching philosophy while applying my knowledge and experience, as an engineer and researcher.

I aim at developing innovative teaching methods that enable inclusive and sustainable curriculum design and development. My teaching responsibilities are focused on teaching modules both at undergraduate and MSc levels.
