Professor Mimoun Azzouz on Sheffield's new Gene Therapy, Innovation and Manufacturing Centre

Professor Mimoun Azzouz, Director of the Gene Therapy Innovation & Manufacturing Centre (GTIMC), explains how the GTIMC, the first in the north of England, will be one of three cutting-edge hubs in the UK dedicated to advancing the clinical development of new genetic treatments. As well as discussing how gene therapy is a promising treatment option for a number of diseases that currently have no other cures, including inherited disorders. 


Dr Alison Buxton on Maker Futures

Dr Alison Buxton, the Director of Maker{Futures} and University Teacher in Makerspace Education from the School of Education, speaks about Maker{Futures}, Sheffield's ambitious programme which aims to develop knowledge about how best to foster STEM learning in early years settings, schools, museums, and in the community. And also how they plan to take forward this innovative and exciting area of work in the years ahead. 


Professor Joanna Gavins on How Linguistics Can Help Tackle Plastics Pollution

Professor of English Language and Literature, Joanna Gavins talks about how linguistics can help tackle plastics pollution. Linguistic data featuring millions of words gathered from social media, manufacturers' language, retailers' language, and focus groups, is examined to understand how people conceptualise plastics, as well as discovering the language we need to use to encourage people to reuse and recycle more effectively.
