Information on eligibility for Sheffield students wishing to go abroad.
University exchanges | Work placements
Below is an outline of the criteria used to decide whether a period abroad activity is classed as eligible for Erasmus+ funding. Please note the criteria are subject to change. The information was correct at the time of writing.
Please note that the information on this page is for students abroad in 2018-19. Erasmus+ grants have not yet been confirmed for students participating in 2019-20 and are subject to the ongoing Brexit negotiations.

University exchanges
Study levels accepted
- Undergraduate
- Postgraduate
- Doctoral
(Depending on your academic department’s exchange links - discuss with your Erasmus+ tutor).
Hosting countries
The exchange must take place within one of your academic department’s Erasmus+ partner universities within the programme countries.
Recognition requirements
The exchange period must count towards your degree.
Duration
The exchange period must last a minimum of 3 consecutive months and a maximum of 12 consecutive months.
The minimum duration cannot fall below 3 whole months unless the host university term is shorter than this.
Mode of attendance
The exchange must be full-time, even if you are normally a part-time student at the University of Sheffield.
Prior receipt of Erasmus funding
You can only receive an Erasmus+ grant for a maximum of 12 months in each study level (i.e. undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies).
Erasmus+ Joint Masters Degree Students (MA Crossways in Cultural Narratives and European Masters Programme in Public Health)
If the University of Sheffield is named as your home university and you will be spending part of your degree in a partner university within one of the programme countries, you may be eligible to receive an Erasmus+ grant for the time you spend at the partner university.
Note that:
- The eligibility criteria above still apply
- You are eligible so long as you do not receive an Erasmus+ Joint Masters degree scholarship

The work placement must take place within one of the Erasmus+ programme countries
Recognition requirements
The work placement must count towards your degree with the exception of recent graduates
Duration
The work placement must last a minimum of 2 consecutive months and a maximum of 12 consecutive months
The minimum duration cannot fall below 2 whole months, even if it falls short by a matter of 1-2 days
Mode of attendance
The work placement must be full-time, even if you are normally a part-time student at the University of Sheffield

Other criteria
- The work placement cannot take place at an ineligible work placement provider
- The work placement can be paid or unpaid
- British Council Assistantships (within the programme countries) can normally be classed as Erasmus+ work placements
- A university can act as a placement provider
NB: If the work placement takes place within a representation or public institution of your home country (e.g. cultural institutes, schools, embassies) , the additional transnational benefits you will obtain compared to a similar placement within the UK must be outlined in the Erasmus+ Training Agreement.
