Exploring STEM for Girls

A science, engineering and maths event for female pupils in Years 9 to 11

Exploring STEM for Girls is a fun and interactive event designed to excite, inform and spark girls’ curiosity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

This event is for female pupils in Years 9 – 11 and will include opportunities to:

  • Take part in practical and fun activities
  • Meet and talk to students and lecturers from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University
  • Discover real world applications and careers in Engineering, Science and Maths
  • Explore the huge variety of exciting career paths open to pupils with STEM qualifications and skills
  • Investigate subject choices and options beyond Year 11
  • Find out about different career routes and qualifications - including Apprenticeships and vocational courses

The session will include an inspirational talk from a prominent female engineer and there will be a wide selection of exhibition stands where pupils will have the opportunity to get involved in lots of hands-on activities and demonstrations.

There will also be a parallel workshop for accompanying school staff. This workshop will be of particular interest to curriculum leaders, achievement coordinators, STEM subject teachers or any school staff involved in advice and guidance roles e.g.: careers advisers and learning or progression mentors.

Teacher's workshop: Girls and Engineering Related Careers

  • Develop a greater awareness of the different opportunities and routes in engineering careers.
  • Develop your understanding of the skills required in engineering disciplines.
  • Explore evidence of why few girls choose engineering related subjects and careers.
  • Discover how schools can effectively support and encourage female pupils to pursue opportunities within this sector.
  • Hear from current female students studying Science and Engineering courses at university about their experiences.

Please note that due to the popularity of this event, places will be limited to a maximum of 30 pupils per school.
