External Funding Bodies

Many charities, foundations and trusts provide funding for postgraduate study. Some offer full scholarships and others offer smaller awards. Some awards are dedicated to a particular purpose while others have more general eligibility criteria.

Below is a list of some organisations offering funding for postgraduate study. The University is not involved in the selection and award of these scholarships and applications should be made directly to the funding body following the instructions on their website.

Canon Collins For Southern African students studying in the UK. International
CONACYT Applicants must be Mexican professionals who wish to pursue postgraduate studies in scientific and technological, social and humanistic quality in an institution recognized abroad. International
Institution of Mechanical Engineers Postgraduate Research Scholarship For research in Mechanical Engineering. Provides a stipend of £6,500 per year. Applications are usually due by 1st August. UK, EU
Institution of Mechanical Engineers Whitworth Senior Scholarship Awards Awards to assist engineers who are intending to do research. Provides a stipend of £7,500 per year. Applications are usually due by 30th June. UK, EU
Institution of Mechanical Engineers Postgraduate Masters Scholarship For exceptional graduate students who wish to pursue further study in mechanical engineering. Provides a stipend of £6,500 per year. Applications are usually due by 1st August. UK, EU
Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund Provides awards ranging from £500 to £3,000 to Canadian men and women for academic and artistic study in the UK on full-time multi-year postgraduate programmes. International
Chevening Scholarship Prestigious awards that enable overseas students to study in the United Kingdom, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and
partner organisations.
Trudeau Foundation Scholarships are available to Canadian citizens applying to a doctoral program in the social sciences and humanities or registered full-time in the first or second year of such a program. International
Commonwealth Scholarships Scholarships to enable Commonwealth citizens to study in the UK on a programme of taught or research postgraduate study. International
Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA) Must have UK refugee status and have worked as a paid Lecturer or Researcher in a University or higher education institution in your home country. International
Croucher Foundation For permanent residents of Hong Kong to devote themselves to a period of full-time study or research in natural science, medicine or technology in approved academic institutions outside Hong Kong. Normally comprises an annual maintenance allowance, assistance towards air passage, plus tuition fees up to and including the third year of the relevant PhD studies programme. International
Fulbright Commission Awards are offered to US citizens to be used towards tuition fees and maintenance costs in their first year of a Masters or PhD study in any discipline at any UK university. International
Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund For Sudanese students studying for a postgraduate course in the UK, who intend to return to Sudan at the end of their studies. International
Islamic Development Bank Merit Scholarship Programme for High Technology: Must be a citizen of an IDB member country, and a permanent employee of an academic institution or a research centre of his/her country. Pays tuition fees, cost of living allowance, health insurance cost and travel ticket cost and dependency allowance for Ph.D. students. International
Marshall Scholarships Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. International
China Scholarships Council Scholarships for Chinese PhD students studying abroad. International
Regeneration Centre of Thailand To fund graduate students of Southeast Asian heritage across the world to help in the furthering of their education. International
Royal Geographical Society Grants from £500 to £6,000 to support fieldwork. UK
Funds for Women Graduates - Foundation Grants Women graduates from UK and overseas, up to £4,000 towards the living expenses of one year's academic study or research. UK, EU
Roberto Rocca Fellowships for exceptional graduates from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Mexico, Romania and Venezuela, to help fund studies towards a PhD in specific fields of study including Materials Science, Mechanical, and Petroleum Engineering at a university of the student's choosing outside his or her home country. International

British Council A range of scholarships are available. UK
British Council: Entente Cordiale For French students, aged 35 or under, for a postgraduate course at a British University. EU
Carnegie Trust Graduates of a Scottish University holding a degree with first-class honours in any subject and intending to pursue three years of postgraduate research for a PhD degree. UK
Institute of Engineering & Technology For students who have achieved a 2:1 or higher in 1st degree and are an IET member (or interested in becoming a member) UK
Colt Foundation For research within the area of occupational and environmental health. UK, EU
Dan David Prize Scholarships The Dan David Prize laureates annually donate twenty scholarships of US$15,000 each to outstanding doctoral and postdoctoral students of exceptional promise in the fields of Past (history & memory), Present (combatting memory loss) or Future (artificial intelligence, the digital mind). Usually a March deadline. UK
Community Foundation For women from either Tyne & Wear or Northumberland to study science, grants of up to £1000. UK
Danish Education Support Agency Funding for Danish students to complete whole study programmes at master's level abroad. EU
Anglo-Danish Society For Danish students whose first degree is from a Danish university or college. EU
Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Indian citizens who have done their first degree in India. International
Panasonic Trust Fellowships For UK students taking Environmental & Energy Engineering FT masters UK
Lanekassen Support for Norwegian students studying abroad - part grant, part loan. International
Musicians Benevolent Fund Several awards for postgraduate study for exceptional young musicians. UK, EU
Pinchuk Fund For citizens of Ukraine up to the age of 35. International
Google – Anita Borg Scholarship Female students with an excellent academic record, an award of €7000 or equivalent per year. UK, EU
Google Europe Scholarship for Students with Disabilities For students with a disability studying Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Informatics, or a closely related technical field. UK, EU
Gen Foundation For study and/or research in the field of biological, chemical, botanical, and food sciences; language, music, and art. Deadline for applications is usually February. UK, EU
Thomas Wall Trust UK nationals who have financial difficulties but who wish to pursue vocational courses or courses concerned with social welfare which will subsequently lead to paid employment. Taught courses only. UK
Vegetarian Charity Grants for people up to the age of 25 in financial need who are vegetarian or vegan. Students can apply for one-off and recurrent grants for specific courses or projects ranging from £100 to £1000. UK
The Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Industrial Design Studentships for outstanding potential designers with a good first degree in engineering or science who wish to develop their capabilities in industrial design. UK
Gerda Henkel Foundation PhD and research scholarships of up to 24 months’ duration are
available for research projects focused on Central Asia.
The Leakey Foundation Funds research related specifically to human origins. UK
The Chartered Institute of Taxation Grants for students undertaking research towards a PhD in taxation at a UK university. Application closing dates are usually April and November. UK, EU
Yivo Institute for Jewish Research A range of doctoral and postdoctoral awards for
research in the field of Jewish Studies.
University Association for Contemporary European Studies Support with travel expenses for studies in 'Contemporary European Studies' UK
The Spalding Trust Research awards and travel grants for projects with an interfaith
The Folklore Society - Estella Canziani Post-Graduate Bursary Assistance for research "in any aspect of Folklore Studies broadly defined" - purchase of materials or equipment, travel or fieldwork expenses. UK
Florence Nightingale Foundation Available to all British and Commonwealth nurses and midwives registered with the NMC and working in the UK - awarded for projects which will directly benefit patients and the professions more widely. Provide up to £5000 for a scholar to undertake a course in research methods, research modules or a dissertation/thesis as part of an academic course of study. UK
The Aerosol Society Awards to postgraduate students carrying out research in the field of aerosol science. UK
The Alcohol Education & Research Council
Awards of up to £7,000 each per year for three years to undertake research in the alcohol field leading to a PhD. UK
The Anatomical Society Research Studentships to be held in departments of anatomical sciences in the UK and Ireland. Application deadline is usually August. UK
The Audio Engineering Society Educational Foundation Support for studies in audio engineering and related fields. UK
The Bibliographical Society Various awards for research within the field of the bibliographical or book-historical study. UK
Biochemical Society - Krebs Memorial Scholarship Support for a PhD in Biochemistry or an allied biomedical science. UK
British Society for Geomorphology Grants of up to £1000 are available to postgraduate BSG members registered for a higher research degree, to contribute towards specific costs of research or to assist in presenting a paper or poster at a conference. UK
Gilchrist Educational Trust Awards for students on a higher education course who find themselves facing unexpected financial difficulties which may prevent completion of it; also for students who are required, as part of their course, to spend a short period studying abroad. UK
The Perry Foundation Awards and Postgraduate Scholarships in Agriculture and related subjects that are of definable benefit to UK Agriculture. UK
Douglas Bomford Trust Awards for research related to the application of engineering and physical science to agriculture, horticulture, forestry, amenity and allied land based and biological activities for the sustainable benefit of the environment and mankind. UK
The Leathersellers' Company Awards of up to £4000. Applications are particularly welcomed from students of engineering or subjects connected with the leather trade. UK
Responsible Gambling Fund Funding for PhDs in gambling-related research. UK
Society for Theatre Research Awards from £100 to £2,000, as contributions to the cost of research which is substantially concerned with the history and practice of the British theatre. UK
Venere Scholarships Scholarships for studying business or tourism at an approved United Kingdom university. UK, EU
