Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarships and Bursaries

Even though the cost of living for students at the University of Sheffield is among the lowest in the country, you may still be able to benefit from the extra financial assistance that we can provide. The Department offers achievement and excellence scholarships, and the University offers a number of scholarships and bursaries to help fund your study and enhance your learning experience.

Scholarships 

Academic Achievement Scholarships (UK/EU students)

The Department of Computer Science is offering a number of Academic Achievement Scholarships to UK and EU students starting an undergraduate degree in September 2019.

Scholarships of £1,000 will be awarded as a one-off payment in recognition of academic excellence to students starting on an undergraduate honours degree programme within the Department of Computer Science in 2019. Students will receive a further £1000 upon successful attainment of a 70% average at the end of the first year.

To be eligible for an academic achievement scholarship you must:

  • attain A level grades of A*A*A (or above), or equivalent, including an A* in Mathematics. 
  • have made The University of Sheffield your first (firm) choice in the UCAS application process
  • commence your undergraduate studies in the Department of Computer Science in 2019
  • apply to study a full-time undergraduate programme in the Department of Computer Science
  • be from the UK or EU (not be classed as an international student for tuition fees purposes)
  • be taking all prerequisite subjects for your selected degree

The £1000 scholarship will be paid automatically in October 2019. You do not need to apply. The subsequent £1000 payment will be made following confirmation of your first-year grade average.

Computer Science Excellence Scholarship (international students)

Scholarships of up to £2000 will be awarded as a one-off payment in recognition of academic excellence to overseas students starting an undergraduate degree in September 2019 in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield.

The scholarship amount awarded is dependent on academic achievement, qualification equivalent to A levels: A*A*A - £1000, A*A*A* - £2000. The Department will confirm equivalences.

To be eligible for an Excellence Scholarship you must:

  • attain A level grades of A*A*A (or above), or equivalent, including an A* in Mathematics.
  • make The University of Sheffield your first (firm) choice in the UCAS application process
  • commence your undergraduate studies in the Department of Computer Science in 2019
  • apply to study a full-time undergraduate programme in the Department of Computer Science
  • be classed as an international student for tuition fee purposes
  • be taking all prerequisite subjects for your selected degree

We will offer the scholarship in the form of a cash bursary at the start of your course should you be eligible. The scholarship amount is depended on your academic achievement please email the Undergraduate Admissions Team if you have any questions: ug-compsci@sheffield.ac.uk

Once in receipt of this scholarship, you will be awarded £1,000 each subsequent academic year subject to maintaining a 70% overall average mark in the previous academic year.

Candidates will not have to apply for these scholarships, as they are automatically awarded to all eligible students when they commence their studies in the Department in October 2019.

  • The scholarships will take the form of a cash bursary only.
  • The scholarship will be awarded automatically in October – no application is required in the first or any subsequent years.
  • Receipt of the scholarship in subsequent years of study is subject to you achieving 70% overall average mark in the previous academic year. The scholarship will be withdrawn if you fail to achieve 70% and it will not be reinstated in the following year.
  • You will not receive the scholarship during any optional or compulsory study abroad periods or year in industry.
  • Students taking the University of Sheffield International College pathway program are not eligible for the scholarship.
  • The scholarship can be awarded in conjunction with other University of Sheffield scholarships as long as the individual does not become fully funded for tuition fee purposes, as a result of the sum of these awards.
  • The University of Sheffield reserves the right to review and change scholarship provision.
Experience Sheffield Scholarship

The University is offering 150 Experience Sheffield Scholarships worth £3,600 each for home and EU students starting their studies in September 2019.

These awards are entirely funded by donations from alumni (former students) and friends of the University from around the world.

The University of Sheffield and the Department of Computer Science offer a wide range of funding opportunities for PhD students.

  • Research GrantsMost of our PhD students are supported by research grants held by individual academics or research groups.
  • University and Faculty Scholarships: The University of Sheffield and the Faculty of Engineering offer a number of highly competitive scholarships. 
  • Departmental Scholarships: Each year the Department has funds to finance a number of full scholarships for UK/EU applicants and a number of partial fee scholarships for non-UK/EU applicants. Applicants wishing to apply for a departmental scholarship should discuss funding opportunities with their prospective supervisor.
  • EPSRC Doctoral Training Grants: Each year the Department of Computer Science offers a number of additional Doctoral Training Grants to top applicants. To apply you must contact potential supervisors to discuss a project. Your application must consist (1) of a complete application form submitted through university admissions, and (2) a project proposal that has been developed together with your supervisor, and has been submitted to our PhD administrator. Please check the EPSRC web site for eligibility and contact our Postgraduate research admissions office for further information.
  • Other sources of funding: Many of our international PhD students are funded by governments or institutions of their home countries, or by international exchange programmes. We are happy to offer help and advice with such applications.
  • Additional Support. The Department of Computer Science can offer financial support, potentially in the form of reduced tuition fees, to top up existing financial support if there is a strong case. To apply, please contact our Postgraduate research admissions office.
