We conduct an annual survey to check on the condition of trees owned by the University of Sheffield. Unfortunately the survey has identified 7 trees close to the Arthur Willis Environment Centre which need to be felled for safety reasons. The work will be carried out by our trusted contractor, Sheffield Tree Care.
The work will be as follows:
- Felling a large sycamore to a 3 metre stem. This tree has a lesion in its base, which is decaying and causing it to lean. After review, there’s now a risk of collapse and it should be felled. Fortunately we can keep 3metres of the tree for habitat and coverage. It is situated in a group of trees backing onto Crookesmoor Road
- A group of self-set elms, in close proximity, have succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease. As this progresses there’s a higher risk of collapse and the dropping of dead wood. We are advised that It is best to remove all of them as part of these works.
- A dead elm is leaning over Narrow Walk and neighbouring properties on Highnam Crescent Road. It’s rubbing against another healthy tree and its crown is suppressed. This will be felled.
- Four dead elms, backing onto Narrow Walk and Elmore Road, are forming one crown and leaning over a footpath, spreading a lot of dead wood. It’s recommended that we now fell the dead trees.
As per our policy, we will plant 2 trees for every tree felled. In November 2020, we planted 15 trees at Arthur Willis Environment Centre and we will add another set of trees around this area in November 2021 to continue our rejuvenation policy.
