If you wish to use metrics to make decisions with financial implications (e.g. hiring and promotion, assigning funding etc.) we strongly recommend that you consult Research Services, in order to check if your planned use of metrics is responsible, appropriate and in line with University guidelines.

The University Library can provide general advice on:

  • an overview of citation metrics and altmetrics (what they are and how they work)
  • how to use metrics tools to identify highly cited or highly discussed journals, authors and journal papers for your studies or research

  • the strengths, drawbacks and limitations of metrics
