Requesting items

Guidance on how to make, collect and cancel requests for items from the Library.

Making a request

You can request any item that is not for reference use only in the Library. This information can be found in the items description on StarPlus.

If we have a print copy of a book that is loanable you can click request on the StarPlus record for the book to reserve a copy. We will then email to let you know when the book is available for you to collect.

For more info on how to request an item, read our Can I request items? frequently asked questions (FAQ)

To learn how to make a request for an item, see our How do I borrow and return books? FAQ

Items that are listed as 'received', 'on order' or 'in processing' can be requested but are not yet available on the shelves. Remember that as they are not yet available you may have to wait longer to receive them.

In addition, you will not be able to request material if there is a problem with your UCard (eg if your account has been frozen), if you have already requested the item, or if you currently have the item on loan.

What happens next?

If the item you require is on loan for more than two weeks, the current borrower will be sent a recall notice asking for it to be returned by a revised date. Items due back in under two weeks will be due for return on the original due date, and the current borrower will be unable to renew the item.

To learn how to check the progress of your request, read our How do I see the progress of my request? FAQ

Collecting requests

When your request has been processed we will send you an email stating the collection window for the item and also a reminder about the site for collection.

We only hold items for a short period so check your email regularly as the item will be re-shelved if you don’t collect by the date on your notification email.

Items in heavy demand are frequently requested by more than one customer. In this case, it may be that the item is issued for a shorter period and renewals are not possible.

If you know that you will have problems in picking up the item by the date on the email then contact the library, either email library@sheffield.ac.uk or use our live chat service and we will do what we can to help.

Pick-up locations can be found at:

  • Western Bank Library - Self-service area on level five (self-service)

  • Information Commons - Self-service area on level 0 (self-service)

  • Health Sciences Library, Royal Hallamshire Hospital - Information Desk

Cancelling requests

If you no longer require an item you have requested, let us know as soon as possible so that it is available for other people to borrow.

To check the progress of your request or to cancel it, read our How do I cancel my request? FAQ.

The best way to stay up to date on how to request items, collect requests, or issue items to your account is to check our Library FAQ page.

You can search the page for any questions you may have, or get in touch with us via our live chat feature.
