Mentoring Workshops for Research Supervisors

I’ve been working closely with research staff and students over the last few years on various mentoring programmes, through which I have had the opportunity to understand the impact of supervision styles, tensions, worries, and pitfalls on progression, development and career. Based on these experiences and pilot data, I have led a funded research exploration of trust and supervision this year. I offer the following workshops as chances to hear and discuss some of the data as related to your own supervision skills and practices.

Workshop Sessions Delivery Details

++ The Supervisor as Mentor ++ This session covers some introductory mentoring and coaching ideas and techniques useful in cultivating successful relationships with those you supervise. It acknowledges and builds on the pre-existing conversation and supervision skills, helping to develop a mentoring style of management that is applicable across working relationships. Experience gathered from the Researcher Mentoring Programme is used to inform this session and build mentoring practices in a research supervision context.

Supporting a researcher who wants to change career can present challenges - for you and for them. In this session we'll discuss the concerns and issues that career changers and those who supervise them have identified, introduce strategies and techniques to enable you to confidently support this group in their research and beyond, and highlight resources and additional support that your researchers can access.

++ Supervising Research Students: setting up the partnership ++ This session utilises tools from coaching disciplines and offers some ideas and techniques you can use to acknowledge and agree the supervision partnership and get off to the best possible start. Known as the ‘contracting’ process in coaching, inviting open discussions about expectations, roles, responsibilities, and how you can each work best together, can support the building of effective relationships that weather through testing times. This session acknowledges and builds on the pre-existing supervision skills and experiences of participants and offers a chance to reflect on what has worked for you. Experience gathered through the Trust Me! research study is used to inform this session and build tools for research supervision.

++ Supervising Thesis Writers ++ Avoidance of procrastination of the writing of the PhD thesis can be achieved through 1:1 conversations, turning problems into solutions using a 'Solutions Focused Approach'. This workshop will share some of the intel from an on-going study into the barriers to thesis writing, as identified by students who are writing up. We will share practical techniques for enabling your students to take responsibility for the writing process, make a plan, get started, and stay started. Experience gathered through the Thesis Mentoring Programme is used to inform this session and build tools for research supervision.
