Civil and structural engineers help to create and protect the world we live in. Driven by teaching and research excellence, we inspire and empower our students to engineer a better future.

Come along to this taster session to see if civil and structural engineering could be the right course for you.

Innovations in Structural Engineering: Strengthening against earthquakes

This session will discuss the use of advanced composite materials as a novel class of reinforcement for concrete structures, and will illustrate the benefits of using advanced composites to increase the seismic performance of existing buildings.

Expect to:

  • gain an appreciation of the structural limitations of concrete
  • familiarise with composite materials and their use as reinforcement for concrete
  • gain an appreciation of how advanced composites can be used in structural strengthening applications

This session is suitable for students in years 12 and 13.

They are great for getting to know the subject and getting a feel for the course. People were knowledgeable in the specific field (eg professors and students in civil engineering rather than just mathematicians/physicians)
