Description

This online taster session will give you a feel for what it's like to study English at university. You'll hear a taster lecture by one of our academics in English; there'll be time for questions afterwards; and you'll be able to ask staff and current undergraduates about studying English at Sheffield.

The many loves of Jane Eyre

Studying Jane Eyre, love English Literature, or thinking about studying English at university? This is the session for you. Join Bronte scholar Dr Amber Regis as she explores the presentation of love in Jane Eyre. Alongside the talk, you’ll also have the chance to take part in a Q&A with current Literature students, and find out more about the department.

Jane Eyre is best remembered as a great love story between its heroine – the “poor, obscure, plain and little” governess, Jane – and her rich and powerful employer, Mr Rochester. This is how the book is marketed to readers, and how it’s sold to audiences across a range of stage and screen adaptations. But love is a complicated thing, and we’ll spend time in this session putting pressure on Brontë’s great love story. We’ll pay close attention to the violence, domination and self-sacrifice that accompany expressions of love and desire, and we’ll think about different varieties of love beyond heteronormative romance.
