Description

The French government is unofficially implementing the evacuation of camps and settlements and a systematic hunt of refugees. The impacts on the refugee population and on urban landscapes are drastic.

In this session, we will review the situation at three different militarised border zones.

Hospitality and refugees at the French militarised border zones: Calais, Dunkirk and Briançon

The question of migration in relation to the concept of hospitality in border zones in France is extremely pressing. The French government is unofficially implementing a policy of ‘zero point of fixation’ that implies evacuation of camps and settlements every 24 hours at the northern border and the systematic hunt of refugees at the Franco-Italian border.

The impacts on the refugee population and on urban landscapes are drastic. Dr Sophie Watt will review the situation at three different militarised border zones in France (Dunkerque, Calais and Briançon) and discuss some of the data she collected during her field trips and her work in different refugee camps.

This session is suitable for students in years 12 and 13.

The direct testimonies from refugees and volunteer workers from different NGOs and charities that I collated, bear witness of the direct impacts the recent immigration policies and practices have upon migrant populations seeking refuge in France.

Dr Sophie Watt
