Granutools

Granutools improves powder understanding by delivering leading edge physical characterization tools. “All we do is powder flow characterization”

PHYSICAL INSIGHTS
Combining decades of experience in scientific instrumentation with fundamental research on powders characterization, our tools are designed for accuracy, repeatability and operator independence with strict initialization protocols and high level of automation.
Therefore, the measurables lead to the physical understanding of powder mechanisms.

Our tools have been developed to help you to answer the following questions:

What are the flow properties of your products? From nanostructured powders to granular materials. How will your powders work after processes, pre- and post-treatments? Like exposure to moisture or heat, effect of storage and mixing. How to optimize your formulation regarding the flowability? Considering the grain size distribution, chemical products, fill, and blend. Are your manufacturing processes under control? Are they affected by the quality of the precursors, raw products or process conditions? Are the flow properties of your granular materials, powders and nanostructured powders fluctuating over time? Since they are depending on storage, handling conditions, temperature, moisture or electrostatics.

GranuPack - High resolution tapped density analyzer - Granular material density analyzer - Automated tapped density and compaction dynamic measurements

GranuCharge - Granular material electric charge analyzer - Electrostatic charge measurement of a flowing powder on a surface

Granumidity - Automated instrument able to set a desired humidity level inside a chamber (with a volume lower than 200L). Usually this instrument works paired with the GranuCharge in order to study the influence of humidity on triboelectricity

WORKFLOWS
We follow a general principle for powder flow measurement: “The stress state and the flow field of the powder should be comparable in the measurement cell and in the process.”
Our instruments mimic processes at a different scale.
The complementary instruments are then combined into workflows to reproduce each step of the processes we want to characterize.

GranuFlow - Granular material flowmeter - Semi-automated measurement of powder flow rates through apertures

GranuHeap - Granular material heap analyzer - Automated repose angle and cohesive index measurements

GranuDrum - Granular material flow analyzer – Powder rheometer - Automated cohesive index and rheology measurements

Parsum

The Parsum principle: Particle measurement directly within the process

The well-known technique of fibre-optic spatial filter anemometry was developed by Parsum so that not only the velocities of particles could be measured, but also their sizes. Unlike traditional particle size measuring methods that involve sampling and laboratory analysis, Parsum has always used inline measurement right from the start. Several patents have been granted for this method in Germany, Europe and the USA.

The consistent development of accessories for process adaptation – the so-called “process interface” – has been the principal factor in allowing Parsum to establish itself as the market leader in the area of particle measurement in Fluidised Bed and High-Shear Granulation processes. With the new inline dispersers, Parsum probes can perform measurements even in very high-load, wet and dusty processes.

Parsum has installed more than 380 measuring systems in 24 countries to date. In addition to global pharmaceutical firms and companies in the food and chemical sectors, its customer base also includes numerous universities and research institutions. For international distribution, Parsum has had UK-based Malvern Instruments Ltd. on side as a partner since 2003.In several R&D projects carried out in cooperation with customers, plant manufacturers and universities; Parsum has put a lot of investment into the advanced development of its particle probes in recent years.

The Parsum Inline Particle Probes make it possible to carry out inline monitoring of all granulation processes and allows for the real-time visualisation of granulate growth in batch processes or constant product quality in continuous processes. Critical parameters for these processes, such as spray rate, temperature, air volume, contact pressure, rotational speed, binder amounts, spray pressure, etc., can be controlled and optimised for the specific product. The final granulate size can therefore be accurately defined and the process time for batch processes can be reduced. In continuous processes, trends and quality fluctuations can be detected at an early stage.

Surface Measurement Systems Ltd

Surface Measurement Systems develop and engineer gravimetric sorption analyzers and inverse gas chromatography instruments for physico-chemical characterization of solid state materials. Our instruments can be used for studying sorption and desorption isotherms, vapor and gas diffusion kinetics, hysteresis effects, stability studies, water activity, phase transformations, amorphous content, permeability, surface energy heterogeneity, dispersive and acid-base surface energy, solubility parameters, heats of adsorption and works of adhesion and cohesion.

We are world leaders in sorption science and inventors of Dynamic Vapour Sorption (DVS) technology and Inverse Gas Chromatography (IGC) instrumentations. We provide professional world-class scientific and technical support for all our customers and our products are used by hundreds of leading laboratories and universities globally.

Inverse Gas Chromatography - Surface Energy Analyzer (iGC-SEA)
This system is specially designed to determine the surface energy heterogeneity but nevertheless suitable for measuring different surface and bulk properties of solid materials including acid / base properties, heat of sorption, glass transition temperature, solubility parameters and so on.

Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS)
This system allows for real-time monitoring and controlling of vapor and gas concentration for sorption measurements in solid state materials. The sorption mechanism may be investigated from sorption / desorption isotherms, hysteresis effects, and sorption kinetics. The combination of a video microscope and vibrational spectroscopic techniques with DVS would allow for increased understanding of vapor-induced structural changes of solid materials.

Vapor Pressure Analyzer (VPA)
The Vapor Pressure Analyzer or VPA measures the vapor pressures of solids, liquids and oils using the Knudsen effusion method.
