As a medium-sized parish (with 25-40 people attending each Sunday) made up primarily of retired adults, young families, and university students, we aim to create an inclusive space where we can come and meet God and each other.
Our Sunday services are fairly traditional: think priests in robes, our choir and pipe organ performing traditional hymns and modern worship music, and readings from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), the New Testament and the Gospels, following the pattern set by the wider Church of England. These services are followed by coffee and tea in our church hall: an optional time to catch up with one another and enjoy each other’s company.
Our worship is led by Revd Dr Ela Nutu Hall, a self-supporting ordained minister who also leads the University’s Residence Life service supporting students in Halls; Revd Canon Mike West, a retired industrial chaplain and canon; and Rt Revd Richard Blackburn, a retired bishop. We also rely on a healthy team of volunteers, who contribute to everything from leading prayers to arranging flowers! For those who want to, there are plenty of ways to get involved with life at St Augustine’s, including by joining our church choir or the organ scholar group, who practise on our beautiful Keates pipe organ.
As well as our Sunday Services, we have coffee mornings in the parish every week. During Advent and Lent, we also run evening and morning Bible study groups which encourage us to consider specific passages across the Bible in different themes and contexts. We also hold several extraordinary services throughout the year, including a charming carol service just before Christmas and a memorial service to help local and American personnel commemorate the crash of the Mi Amigo plane in Endcliffe park in 1944.

- What is your policy on gender roles/equality in leadership? St Augustine's Priest-in-Charge and Oversight Minister is a woman. We consider women leading in our worship and community to be the norm rather than the exception.
- What is your policy on same-sex relationships, especially with regard to leadership? St Augustine’s is part of the Inclusive Church network; we warmly affirm and celebrate the full expression of human gender and sexuality.
- What provision do you have for people with specific accessibility needs? The church is fully accessible for people with mobility issues, including wheelchair users. A hearing loop is installed in the church to help those with hearing impairments.
Although I had only a limited experience of Christian worship I was made very welcome and soon felt at home.
