Profile

Professor Po Yang is Professor of Pervasive Intelligence in the School of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield, where he also serves as Deputy Director of Research and Innovation. He obtained his BSc (Hons) in Computer Science from Wuhan University, China, an MSc in Computer Science from the University of Bristol, and a PhD in Electronic Engineering from Staffordshire University. Since 2015, Professor Yang has established and led successful research teams at Liverpool John Moores University (2015–2019) and subsequently at the University of Sheffield (2019–present). He also serves as an Independent Scientific Advisor for the BridgeAI programme at the Alan Turing Institute.

Professor Yang has extensive research expertise in pervasive and mobile intelligence, conducting interdisciplinary research across machine learning, pervasive computing, smart sensing, and data science. Since 2019, he has secured over £2.5 million as Principal Investigator and coordinated research projects worth more than £6 million, funded by organisations including Innovate UK, BBSRC, STFC, EPSRC, Research England, and industry partners. He has published more than 100 journal papers and over 80 IEEE/ACM conference papers, with more than 9,600 citations and an h-index of 47. His publications include 43 IEEE Transactions and journal papers, contributions to leading conferences such as AAAI, KDD, and CIKM, and four ESI Highly Cited Papers. His work has received several recognitions, including the 2022 Best Paper Award from the IEEE IES Society TC-II and the 2025 Best Paper Award at IEEE INDIN 2025.

Professor Yang has successfully supervised more than 20 PhD students as Director of Studies, many of whom have progressed to careers in academia and industry. Professor Yang currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Array (Elsevier) and Associate Editor for IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine, Journal of Biomedical Informatics, and Scientific Reports.
