Bioengineering & Health Technologies Group Conference Successes

Members of the School’s Bioengineering and Health Technologies group recently attended and presented at two national meetings, UK Society for Biomaterials (UKSB) Annual Conference and Medical Technologies Innovation and Knowledge Centre (IKC) Regener8 Annual Conference, winning a number of travel and innovative research awards.

UKSB, University of Bath, 28-29th June 2018

Congratulations to postdoctoral researcher Caroline Wilcock and PhD student Selina Beal who both won newly established society travel awards, given out to those showing excellence in their work, dedication and ambition to further biomaterials research. The Lab2Lab placement award of £500 to facilitate interactions between 2 or more labs and the development of new collaborations, was awarded to Caroline and has allowed her to complete a three-week placement at Cardiff University Dental School. Working in collaboration with Professor Alistair Sloan and the Mineralised Tissue group, Caroline had great success trialling her materials with the methods developed at Cardiff, investigating the development of an ex vivo bone infection model. Selina was awarded one of the highly competitive Travel Bursaries for PhD students attending and presenting an oral presentation at the meeting, enabling her to attend The European Biomaterial Conference in Maastricht, in September. Group members Joss Atkinson and Sam Pashneh-Tala manned a CellSupports trade stand, helping to raise the profile and publicise The University of Sheffield service, supplying highly-reproducible scaffolds for cell culture and tissue engineering research applications.

IKC Regener8, University of Leeds, 29th June 2018

Tom Paterson and Katharina Clitherow represented the School of Clinical Dentistry at the recent one day IKC Regener8 meeting which focussed on best practice in translating regenerative devices. Entered into the Digital Scientific Content competition, they both won prizes for their videos depicting their research https://youtu.be/XsT2EwfuzDY.

Dr Cheryl Miller, Head of the Bioengineering and Health Technologies Research Group, says: "We are immensely proud of our research staff and students who represented the School impeccably at two national conferences. Joss Atkinson and Sam Pashneh-Tala made a great impact, relaunching CellSupports with their promotional stand.

"Selina Beal and Caroline Wilcock won invaluable travel awards enabling Selina to showcase our research at the upcoming European Biomaterial Conference in Maastricht, and Caroline to strengthen our collaboration with Cardiff Dental School. Thomas Paterson and Katharina Clitherow continue to pioneer the skills of digital dissemination both winning individual prestigious prizes for their compilations”.

Additional Information

The Bioengineering and Health Technologies Group leads research into all aspects of the use of biomaterials and medical devices for the repair of human tissues to restore functionality and aesthetics. The Group brings together basic scientists, dental technicians, and clinicians to form a dedicated team with all the skills necessary to support a broad interdisciplinary programme. Their project portfolio encompasses research into advanced and nanostructured materials, digital dentistry and advanced manufacturing, and regenerative therapies including tissue engineering, directed at providing the scientific and technical advances that underpin the deployment of new technologies and clinical interventions to make a substantial difference to human longevity and improved quality of life.
