Description

We are pleased to announce our Dr Ali Vahdati, Director, Multi-disciplinary Mechanics and Modeling Laboratory (M3L) at East Carolina University will give a seminar on ‘Applications of biomechanics and modeling in personalized medicine’ on Friday 18 March 2022. Insigneo Members please check your calendar invitations for online joining details. To request an invitation please contact info@insigneo.org.

Abstract:

The human body's organs, tissues, and cells experience complex mechanical loading in their physiological environment. Consequently, mechanical forces play an essential role in the pathogenesis of many connective tissue diseases and the outcome of various surgeries. This talk will cover how computational modeling and experimental techniques can be utilized to better understand the interaction of both native tissue and medical devices with the mechanical environment of the human body. Furthermore, examples will be presented from my past and present research projects on computer modeling and mechanical testing of connective tissues and organs including bone, cornea, skin, and the lung.”

Bio:

Dr Ali Vahdati’s research experience is highly interdisciplinary and lies at the nexus of mechanical engineering and biology, focusing on finding innovative solutions for disease prevention and management. Before joining East Carolina University as an Assistant Professor of Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering, Ali was involved in designing numerous medical devices while working for a Fortune 500 medical technology company and in computer modeling of personalized surgical techniques at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. He is the recipient of East Carolina University’s 2022 Scholar-Teacher Award for successfully integrating his externally funded research and teaching. In addition, Ali served as an associate editor for Biomedical Engineering OnLine and editorial board member for Computers in Biology and Medicine. His research has been published in Journal of Biomechanics, Journal of Refractive Surgery, Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, and Life Sciences, among other scientific journals.”
