Speech, Language and Communication Needs

This module introduces students to a range of speech, language and communication impairments experienced by children with special education needs. It outlines the most common conditions, and how these present in children.
Suitable for
Learning Support and Teaching Assistants, Speech and Language Therapy Assistants, Nursery Nurses and others working in a support role with children with Special Educational Needs.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:
- Describe the features of more common speech, language and communication impairments
- Observe and describe the speech, language and communication skills of a child with developmental difficulties
- Discuss the relationship between spoken and written language difficulties.
- Share experiences of children’s difficulties within their own work context with other students, in relation to topics introduced in this module.
Teaching Methods
The module content is delivered online and includes guided independent study, using online reading material available from the University Library. Students are supported by University tutors via online discussion boards and email.
Online learning will be supplemented by an optional 1-day study block in Sheffield.
Timetable
The module starts in March of each year. The module runs over a period of 12 weeks, and this 15 credit module should take about 150 hours to complete (including preparation for the assignment). See timetable for the year.
Assessment
A 3,000-word assignment.
