If you are 21 or over, don't have traditional university entry qualifications, and are interested in finding out about studying at university, join us at our next FREE event.

What is it? This event will feature an introductory talk, followed by a selection of taster sessions (you can attend up to 2), followed by an optional tour of the University campus. During the event staff and current students from the Department for Lifelong Learning will be available to answer any questions you have about studying as a mature student.

Who is it for? These are open sessions for anyone 21 or over, without traditional university entry qualifications, who would like to find out more about studying at the University of Sheffield. No prior knowledge or experience of higher education is required.

When is it? Thursday 24th January, 9:30am until 12:30pm (with optional campus tour starting at 12:30pm)

Where is it? The Discovery Rooms, University of Sheffield Students' Union, Western Bank, Sheffield, S10 2TQ

You can register for up to two of these sessions and the welcome talk. You do not need to have any prior knowledge or experience of the topic to attend.

Programme of Taster Activities* 

9:30am The day will start with registration and refreshments, followed by a brief welcome and introductory talk from the Department for Lifelong Learning.

Cartooning Around: History Through Humour

The study of history always involves the analysis of primary sources, and this includes additional materials beyond more conventional written sources. This taster offers a fun introduction to using cartoons for historical analysis, showing how Britain's relationship with Nazi Germany was perceived in the 1930s and the Second World War.

Inequality: Is it Fair?

In this session we will look at how various goods like income, healthcare, education and jobs are distributed unequally across Sheffield. Using maps, data and discussion we will ask ourselves: is it fair?

From Plant to Pill

In this session you will learn about how plants are used to develop everyday medicines. You will look at the classification of plants and diseases and the link between the two, including how and why chemicals produced by plants work in the human body. You will also consider what may happen next in the development of medicines.

When Worlds Collide: The Politics of Business

This discussions focuses on the impact of politics on business and vice versa. It will consider the good and bad, touch on ethics and corporate responsibility; not just legislation. You will use some high profile case studies to illustrate key points, and discuss ideas with the group.

Happiness by Design: Strategies for a Fun and Fulfilling Life

What is happiness? Can I become more fulfilled in life? Is there such a thing as too much happiness? If you've ever asked yourself these, or similar, questions this session about the psychology of happiness is for you. We will look at the ways that psychologist have defined happiness and explore the strategies and techniques to maximise your own contentment and well-being.

This taster would be for you if you are interested in studying:

Meet the Ancestors

This session will introduce you to DNA, chromosomes and genes, looking at the similarities between humans and other animals. You will learn about the Human Genome Project and investigate how closely related humans really are to chimpanzees.
