To me engineering isn't just about building bridges, it's about breaking barriers.

The highlight of my journey is empowering and representing those from disadvantaged backgrounds in places I never imagined like the Institute of Leaderships Awards ceremony and speaking at the Houses of Commons about my challenges as a first generation immigrant.
Being able to help others was the most fulfilling aspect. I was able to leverage the university's support such as the student societies like the BAME Engineering Society to bridge gaps and connections, knowledge, opportunities and confidence for the students across the university at Sheffield.
In my spare time this year, I have been helping students across this country build their applications for placements or internships. I can confidently say that the thought put into the University of Sheffield's engineering degrees to make them industry relevant is unmatched.
The next step for me is to release my app called 'Engineering for Everyone' to help guide disadvantaged students and international students through the education system in the UK. Essentially its a signpost to resources to make them acccessible to those who need them most.
Surayya Kausar
Mechatronic & Robotics Engineering Student
To me engineering isn't just about building bridges, it's about breaking barriers, with the University of Sheffield there is not a single door of opportunity that didn't open for me. I can never take credit for all of my achievements alone because in my opinion it literally took a whole village.
