The Faculty of Engineering is home to a range of state-of-the-art facilities, centres and laboratories, enabling us to provide the highest quality teaching and carry out internationally leading research across all of our departments.
Mappin & The Heartspace
The Sir Frederick Mappin building has been the centre of engineering for the last 150 years and the Engineering Heartspace, which is housed under a new, curved glass roof, links together the Grade II listed building with the 1885 Central Wing.
University of Sheffield Innovation District
Our world-leading translational research facilities are based at the heart of the University of Sheffield's Innovation District. The three centres, along with the AMRC, build upon the Sheffield City Region's manufacturing and digital strengths to support the UK Government's Industrial Strategy.
The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing helps manufacturers of any size to become more competitive, by introducing advanced techniques, technologies and processes. It has become a model for collaborative research involving universities, academics and industry, worldwide.
Laboratory for Verification and Validation
The LVV is a unique facility for conducting vibration and acoustic testing across length scales and climatic environments, scaling up to real-world industrial application. It is one of the only openly accessible research facilities of its kind in the world.
The Integrated Civil and Infrastructure Research Centre (ICAIR) is a powerful experimental facility for investigating both underground and above ground infrastructure, using data, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing techniques to increase productivity in the design, construction and operation of civil infrastructure.
Royce Translational Centre
One of the prestigious Henry Royce Institute facilities, the Royce Translational Centre is home to Royce at Sheffield and the metal research group of the AMRC, the National Metals Technology Centre (NAMTEC). It accelerates the transfer of knowledge to industry in the field of Advanced Metals Processing.
Translational Energy Research Centre
Part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Translational Energy Research Centre is dramatically broadening the scope of the pilot-scale testing facilities currently available in the UK. It includes state-of-the-art equipment for conventional energy, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, biomass, hydrogen, renewable energy, energy storage and smart grids.
Sustainable Aviation Fuels Innovation Centre
SAF-IC is one of the first facilities in Europe to be able to capture CO₂, produce green hydrogen, convert them into sustainable aviation fuels and analyse their performance all in one single location. SAF-IC is a development hub for the research and scaling-up of sustainable aviation fuels, offering laboratory and testing space as well as coordination and networking facilities.
