We are working with Cultural Inclusive C.I.C. to offer free cultural and language workshops for Sheffield schools in 2027, celebrating Chinese New Year, the Year of the Sheep. Following the success of our 2026 scheme, we are delighted to offer the programme for a second year.

Celebrating the Year of the Sheep
Following the success of our 2026 programme, the Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield is delighted to be preparing to offer our Free Workshops for Schools for a second consecutive year, celebrating Chinese New Year 2027 – the Year of the Sheep.
Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027. We are planning to offer free, engaging Chinese language and cultural workshops in schools, helping pupils discover Chinese traditions and celebrate this important festival.

About the Free Workshops for Schools
The Sheffield Confucius Institute has been supporting Chinese language and cultural learning across the city since 2007.
Since 2007, the Sheffield Confucius Institute (SCI) has supported Chinese language and culture across the city. We have worked with a wide range of schools to provide Mandarin lessons, After-school Clubs, China Day activities, School Diversity Week, Diversity and Inclusion Day, Enrichment Programme and more, offering opportunities for pupils to explore Chinese culture through engaging, interactive learning experiences.
Our free Chinese New Year workshops aim to bring Chinese language, arts and traditions into the classroom in an accessible and enjoyable way. The programme is designed to support cultural awareness, language learning and global citizenship, while giving pupils the opportunity to learn through practical activities.
Workshops delivered in 2026: Year of the Horse
Throughout January and February 2026, the Sheffield Confucius Institute worked with Cultural Inclusive C.I.C. to offer participating schools a free one-hour China Day session in the lead-up to Chinese New Year, the Year of the Horse.
The programme introduced pupils to Chinese language, culture and Lunar New Year traditions through interactive workshops and presentations. Activities included:
- Chinese brush calligraphy – exploring brushwork, simple characters and auspicious symbols.
- Chinese arts and crafts – creative activities inspired by traditional Chinese art and festival decorations.
- Panda and horse painting – exploring Chinese imagery and the zodiac animal of 2026.
- Tai Chi and Kung Fu – an introduction to traditional movement and martial arts.
- Mandarin language tasters – learning greetings, simple phrases and pronunciation.
- Chinese characters – discovering how characters are formed and how they communicate meaning.
- Assembly presentations – introducing Chinese New Year traditions, cultural practices and the Chinese language to larger groups.
Please note: China Day bookings for full-day or half-day programmes remain open for schools requiring activities for multiple classes or year groups.
