Looking Beyond: Different Perspectives in Travelling Entertainment Photography

Our current exhibition, Looking Beyond: Different Perspectives in Travelling Entertainment Photography, highlights the photographic work of professional photographers as they seek to provide an insight into the unfamiliar world of fairground families, circus performers and tattoo conventions.

Looking Beyond also shows photographs from Professor Brendan Walker’s scientific research on the experience of thrill on fairground and theme park rides.

The exhibition looks at the popular entertainment sector through the power of portraiture and introduces a brief history of the use of photographs and new technologies in the early fairground.

It also showcases some of our earliest photographic and moving picture material from the George Williams and the Birt Acres collections.
