Chinese New Year Workshop: Lantern Festival Quiz

Last month, the Sheffield Confucius Institute organised a series of workshops on Chinese language, calligraphy, music, culture, festivals and Tai Chi to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Lanterns

On Friday the 26 February at 6pm, the Sheffield Confucius Institute held its fifth and final workshop to celebrate Spring Festival. This particular workshop coincided with the end of Spring Festival and Lantern Festival.

This particular workshop involved a virtual interactive quiz, designed and hosted by Confucius Institute teacher Wang Hui and Project Coordinator, Olivia Hodson-Barnes.

The workshop attracted many from the UK and around the world and marked the prefect ending to the Sheffield Confucius Institutes Spring Festival workshop series.

The Lantern Festival Quiz workshop was divided into two rounds, the first on Chinese New Year and consisted of 10 questions, each worth one point each.

The content of the first round covered many aspects, including the traditions, customs, food, celebrations, historical legends and zodiac culture of Chinese New Year. The participant actively participated in the quiz and the answers were revealed at the end of the round.

CNY Quiz

The second round was on Lantern Festival and consisted of 8 questions, each ranging from easy to difficult. The special feature of this round came in the points awarded for each question.

The first question was worth 5 points and with each question, the potential number of points increased, with question eight worth 45 points!

As soon as each question was read out, the first participant to send the correct answer into the Zoom char box got the points! Similarly to the first round, the content covered all aspects of Lantern Festival and participants thoroughly enjoyed this fun interaction.

Based on their combined scores from both rounds, Hui and Olivia announced the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, who each won an Amazon E-voucher.

Over the workshop, between each question and in each round, the atmosphere was sometimes joyous and lively, sometimes tense and nervous. This interactive workshop successfully concluded the series of workshops organised by the Sheffield Confucius Institute.

We would like to thank all the teachers and staff at the Confucius Institute for their hard work and the participants for joining in all of our workshops. Let’s meet again next year in 2022, for the Year of the Tiger!

Feedback from participants:
