Careers and employability

Graduates from the Department of Economics are successful in gaining employment after their studies. Our graduates are some of the most sought after and go on to work with the UK’s best employers.

Whether you are pursuing a career as a professional economist, looking to work in finance or something else entirely, a degree in Economics from Sheffield will put you in a very strong position in the job market. Recent graduates are now working for Bank of England, HM Treasury, the European Parliament, PwC, Deloitte, IBM and Rolls-Royce. Some prefer to advance their knowledge by studying economics at postgraduate level.

Supporting your employability

We are proud of how successful our graduates are in gaining employment after their studies, and we support them in developing the skills that they will need for the workplace. Employment skills training and personal development are part of our curriculum so our students gain these skills alongside their academic studies.

97% of our economics graduates secured employment or further study six months after completing their course.

Work placements (Degree with Employment Experience)

Students can also include employment experience as part of their degrees. Our degrees can be studied as degrees “with Employment experience”, where students spend a year on placement in industry. These placements provide valuable work experience and enable you to apply your economics knowledge and skills in the workplace.

Placements are excellent preparation for entering a competitive job market and ideal if you are looking to secure a job after your degree with a top employer.

Recent student placements have been with the Bank of England, IBM and Lloyds Bank and Volkswagen.

My placement year as an Economist for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in Whitehall was amazing. I worked in a high profile area and I had a great deal of responsibility.

Careers Service

The University’s Careers Service works closely with the Department of Economics to organise opportunities for students to meet employers, and gain work experience placements and graduate jobs. Careers advisers meet with students to support them in developing their skills and make choices from the wide range of opportunities open to them.

Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)

The Sheffield Undergraduate Research Scheme (SURE) offers funded opportunities for students to work in partnership with an academic staff member on a dedicated research project during the summer vacation between their second and third years.

Global Learning Opportunities in the Social Sciences (GLOSS)

GLOSS aims to provide students with unique opportunities to understand their course in an international context. The Global Leadership Initiative offers the opportunity for students to attend major international summits such as the G7 and G20.
