Race and Consent Conversations

Trigger Warning - please note that these workshops contain information and discussion around sexual violence and racial discrimination. You are welcome to leave the session at any point if you feel uncomfortable and are encouraged to contact us via the Safeguarding and Welfare enquiry form.

Race conversations

Race Conversations is aimed to explore race and racism, particularly racial inequality in the UK. The session will include examples of privilege, microaggressions as well as reflective and interactive questions on diversifying the curriculum and tackling difficult conversations. We will also discuss practical intervention tips, equipping our students with skills to safely intervene and protect themselves and or the victim(s). The session will consist of a 20-minute presentation on key concepts and a 40 minute interactive workshop. This training will be delivered by Student Diversity Champions.

Prior to this session we highly encourage you to view the following video, as it will provide you with an initial understanding of race and racism in the UK. We will then explore the topics covered in the video further in our workshops. Racism - We need to think differently (5 minutes).

Consent conversations

Consent Conversations will cover key topics on sexual consent, what the law says, some myths and facts about sexual consent and what an active bystander might look like. The session will consist of a 20-minute presentation on key concepts and a 40-minute interactive workshop. This training will be delivered by Student Diversity Champions.

Blackboard online learning environment

Blackboard is the name of the University’s online space where you can access weekly module content, participate in online teaching sessions, and submit assessments.

There is a Blackboard site dedicated to your Welcome Week, that you should be able to access. On this site there are copies of the presentations that will be given and links to further information and resources. If you are having problems accessing the Blackboard site,  please contact us using the details at the end of this email.

Laptop PC requirements

If you are thinking about bringing your own Laptop computer with you to start your studies at Sheffield, then a Windows computer tends to be run the software easier than a Mac and getting support for any problems is easier. Therefore, we encourage you to bring a Windows laptop if you have one.

You will also need to use Matlab and Simulink software during your studies, so you may want to check the system requirements for this software.

Teaching timetables

Your full teaching timetable will be published on the iSheffield app and you can download this now. But please be aware that timetables will be incomplete until after Welcome Week, as once you have registered we will begin to allocate new students to tutorial groups.

iSheffield is the University of Sheffield’s mobile and web app that allows you to access everything you need during your academic studies, including your timetable.
