HCS6087 Communication Diversity & Difficulties (15 Credits)
This module allows students to select two or more topics in the field of children’s language and communication impairments for more detailed study. Theoretical perspectives and research findings within each topic are evaluated. Implications for practice are explored.
Topics may include the following: autism and autistic spectrum disorders, persisting speech difficulties, dyslexia, literacy: special topics, developmental language disorder (specific language impairment), language and behaviour, language and the environment, language and communication in adolescence, language and communication in early years, language and communication in multi-lingual contexts.
Speech and Language Therapists, teachers and other professionals working with children with SEN.
By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate informed knowledge and understanding of one or two of the topics selected.
- Discuss the impact of a specific condition(s) on children’s learning.
- Critically evaluate theoretical perspectives in the topic(s) selected.
- Critically analyse research findings in the topic(s) selected.
- Apply knowledge and understanding of a specific condition(s) to their practice.
The module content is delivered online and includes guided independent study, using online reading material available from the University Library. Students are supported by University tutors via online discussion boards and email.
Online learning will be supplemented by an optional 1 day study block in November in Sheffield.
The module is available for flexible study from November. The assessment can be submitted either in June or September. This 15 credit module should take about 150 hours to complete (including preparation for the assignment). See timetable for the year.
