University Connect for China

University Connect for China (UCC) enables students to connect to some of the University's online teaching and learning products when studying from China.

This is a service for desktop and laptop computers and is available on Windows and Mac OSX. You are permitted to use University Connect for China in addition to your normal internet connect to access:

  • course content on Blackboard
  • online lectures through Blackboard Collaborate
  • live streaming of teaching through Encore
  • University of Sheffield's Google services including Gmail, Drive and Meet video calls.

Accessing On-Campus Resources

If you need to access resources that are on campus, then you may need to connect to the University VPN service. To do this, you will need to disconnect from UCC in order to then connect to the University VPN service. This will let you access resources on the University’s network. A list of services that may need VPN connectivity can be found at https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/it-services/remote/online-services (Please note that this list may not be definitive).

The availability of other websites and services are not impacted and will not use University Connect for China. Your normal internet connection will continue to operate as it currently does.

Note - when connecting to the University of Sheffield VPN service from China, you will not be able to access Google services. You must connect to the UCC service in order to access Google services in China.
