I am continuing studying topics I have previously learnt about whilst expanding my knowledge

After studying Accounting and Financial Management at Sheffield University Management School for my undergraduate degree, I knew I wanted to stay in this subject area and continue specialising. By doing so, I am able to continue studying topics I have previously learnt about, whilst also engaging in new modules to expand my knowledge.

During my undergraduate years, I felt that I was supported by staff at the Management School, and I really enjoyed the friendly vibe of the building. Also the Triple Crown accreditation that it offers will help set me up for a successful career in the accounting industry. My decision to stay in Sheffield was also driven by the fact that I was comfortable in the city and I could continue playing lacrosse with my university team.

My masters degree requires much more of my time, but there is support available should I need it

My masters degree requires much more of my time, due to the increased workload, but it didn't take me long to adapt to this change because I was already settled into the University. So far I haven’t required any additional support from the Management School, but I have a personal tutor who I can contact whenever I need any help, as well as staff contacts to help with lecture material.

We get taught about relevant and upcoming topics

I have really enjoyed my Sustainability Accounting and Accountability module with Olga Cam, as she is very engaging in her lectures and tutorials, and talks about very relevant and upcoming topics.

Throughout my degree, I have definitely improved on my analytical thinking skills during my degree which is very valuable to employers. Also, it has taught me resilience when learning new concepts that I do not understand, which will benefit me when I start studying for my accountancy qualification. Finally, organisation and planning will be very important for my future career in accountancy, which is something I have improved at during my time at university.

There's lots to like about the city as well

As I regularly go for runs, I love how many parks there are, as well as how easy it is to get to the Peak District. I have been a part of the Sheffield University Lacrosse Club since my 2nd year at university, and I am currently the treasurer of the club. Being part of a sports team has taught me how to work with others, and has given me more discipline. As the treasurer, I have learnt how important it is to stay organised and what it is like to take on a responsible role.

Fortunately, I already had a great group of friends in Sheffield that I had met before my masters, so have continued to live with them this year. However, I have still managed to get to know more people through my course, through group projects and tutorials. Outside of my studies, I am training for a half marathon with one of my friends, as well as playing lacrosse games on Wednesdays. I also like to go for dinner and drinks on the weekends in the city centre.

At the end of a summer internship, I was offered a graduate job

During the summer of 2023, I worked as an audit intern at PwC for 4 weeks. At the end of this internship they offered me a graduate job, starting September 2024, so I will be moving to Manchester as an audit associate after finishing my masters. I think this masters will help me consolidate my knowledge in accounting and finance, so that I feel more confident going into my graduate job. Also it will help me stand out to employers when I eventually look for a different job.

My advice for future students

Consider whether you prefer more numerical or theoretical lecture material and assessments when choosing modules, as there is a variety to pick from. Also, get involved with a society if you haven’t already joined one, as it is a great way to make new friends with similar interests
