Description

The Department of Philosophy at The University of Sheffield is hosting an academic conference on the topic of ‘Explaining Normativity’. This exciting two-day conference will be taking place on the 19th-20th April 2024.

This event is supported by Teemu Toppinen's Projects ‘Expressivism and Transcendental Arguments’ and ‘Quasi-Realism’, both of which are funded by The Research Council of Finland. We are immensely grateful to our friends from Finland for supporting this conference happening here at Sheffield.

Speakers:

  • James Brown (Sheffield): “Beyond the Cognitivism-Noncognitivism Distinction in Metaethics”
  • Felicity Fu (Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou): “Troubles for Moral Sentimentalism”
  • Max Hayward (Sheffield): "Silence, or, "Silence!"? Two ways to be a Metaethical Quietist"
  • Jessica Isserow (Leeds): “Why Morality isn’t a Trump Card: Overridingness and Friendship”
  • James Lenman (Sheffield): “Normative Justification: Where is Bedrock?”
  • Neil Sinclair (Nottingham): “Functional Explanations (and Justifications) of Higher-Order Norms of Normative Discourse”
  • Teemu Toppinen (Tampere) & Vilma Venesmaa (Tampere): “Explaining Open Question Intuitions”
  • Pekka Väyrynen (Leeds): “Make It Right”

On the Friday and Saturday evenings of the conference, speakers will be going out for an evening meal at a local restaurant (we will pick one that provides well for vegans). Delegates who are not speakers are very welcome to join but will have to settle their own bill with the restaurant. There is space on the above google form to indicate whether you intend to join us for dinner, and if you have any dietary requirements.

If you have any questions, please contact Ed Matthews - e.p.matthews@sheffield.ac.uk or Jimmy Lenman - j.lenman@sheffield.ac.uk

We hope to see you there!
