The University of Sheffield has launched a new partnership with other northern universities to support Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) psychology graduates.
The Widening Access Mentoring Scheme Yorkshire and Humber 2020 has been launched in collaboration with the Universities of Leeds and Hull, to tackle the underrepresentation of BAME people in clinical psychology professions.
Many BAME psychology undergraduates and recent graduates choose to pursue professions other than clinical psychology, often due to a lack of contacts in the field.
This results in limited opportunities for these psychologists to think through career options and job or training applications, and means certain ethnic groups are underrepresented within clinical psychology when compared to the populations this profession serves.
The new scheme aims to level the playing field for high calibre BAME psychology undergraduates and recent graduates across Yorkshire and Humber, in terms of accessing the clinical psychology profession.
Eligible candidates will be matched with trainee and qualified clinical psychologists in the region and a range of mentoring experiences will be offered. This is a rare and valuable opportunity to develop supportive and potentially lasting contacts within the field.
Eligibility
Any BAME psychology graduates who are considering clinical psychology as a possible career, have a 2:1 degree in psychology or an equivalent qualification that confers Graduate Basis for Chartered (GBC) membership with the British Psychological Society (BPS) are eligible. You will need to live or work in the Yorkshire and Humber area.

If you are eligible for the scheme, you will be offered one-to-one mentoring opportunities with a trainee and/or qualified clinical psychologists in the Yorkshire and Humber region, depending on availability.
Please note that priority will be given to those who have not been on the Yorkshire and Humber mentoring scheme previously, due to the limited number of mentors available.
