Students Gear Up for Volunteering Outreach

image of volunteeringUniversity of Sheffield volunteers are busy preparing a wide variety of activities for local school children to enjoy this term.

Students have submitted successful project proposals and are now working with staff at Sheffield Volunteering (University of Sheffield Students’ Union) to fine-tune their plans.
Offers to schools include new projects such as Acapella Singing, alongside established workshops covering topics such as: Mock Trials, Food Waste, Engineering, Singaporean Culture, Dental Hygiene, Sports Tasters, and Politics.

The Politics Society’s workshops proved very popular with Y5/6 pupils and teachers last year and will be running again for 2016/17. Volunteers worked with children to explore the concept of politics through mini-debates and votes - including some lively discussions about SATS!

'…great students with a well-structured plan and engaging topics, really impressed and our children got so much out of it…'
Trevor Thornton, Class Teacher, Gleadless Primary School

'The session was brilliant and a great way to introduce children to politics. The leaders worked very well with the children and modelled the type of conversations they expected really clearly.'
Alex Hughes, Class teacher, Gleadless Primary School

'The workshop was really good…the children enjoyed the debating elements…really good topics, including the SATs debate...'
Charles Hollamby, Assistant Headteacher, Westways Primary School
