This mini-lecture is designed to give an introduction to the concepts of secrecy, privacy and anonymity, and how these are utilised in 'anonymous apps'.

Digital media and our identities: Secrecy, privacy and anonymity

Who are you when you use the internet? Do you have a different identity, maybe using a nickname, or are you your most authentic, real self? And what does it actually mean to be authentic, anyway?

In this taster session, students will get a glimpse of what it’s like to take a class called Digital Identities at the University of Sheffield.

We'll introduce some key identity theories and how they can be used to help understand our identities - and how we create them - in digital spaces. We'll also introduce the concepts of secrecy, privacy and anonymity, and how these are utilised in 'anonymous apps'.

This session is suitable for students in years 12 and 13.
