Research interests
  • The evolution and genetics of colour pattern variation
  • The genetic and developmental control of structural colours in animals
  • The process of divergence and speciation within the genome
  • The genetic analysis of natural hybrid zones to identify loci under selection

I am interested in the genetic underpinnings of adaptive evolution, speciation and sexual selection in natural populations. Current research projects in my lab are investigating the evolution, genetics and development of iridescent structural colour and adaptation to altitude in tropical insects.

Teaching activities

I am a Senior Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (attainment against the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning support in higher education).

I am module co-ordinator for APS220 (Evolutionary Biology) and APS359 (Topics in Zoology) and teach animal physiology as part of APS136 and analysis of genomic sequence data as part of APS61011/APS6617 I am co-ordinator for the Evolutionary Biology pathway of the MSc in Biological Sciences.

I am a tutor on APS135 and APS222. I also supervise Level 3 (APS330), Level 4 (APS406) and MRes projects. I am happy to discuss possible projects, which can range from behaviour and ecology to genomics.
