- Profile
-
Professor Dan Gladwin received MEng and PhD degrees in Electronic Engineering from the University of Sheffield, in 2004 and 2009. Following postdoctoral positions focused on power electronics and safety-critical embedded systems for electric vehicles (2009 - 2010), he joined the school as a Lecturer within the Electrical Machines and Drives research group in 2012, before being promoted to Professor of Electrical and Control System Engineering in 2020.
His research expertise is focused on electrical energy storage technologies - including batteries, supercapacitors, and flywheels, as well as whole-system integration, diagnostics, prognostics, and intelligent optimization systems. He serves as Deputy Director of the Centre for Research into Electrical Energy Storage and its Applications (CREESA), managing the UK's only research-led large-scale energy storage test facility (4.1MW capacity). These research activities are supported by a substantial grant portfolio that includes a £3.8M grid-connected lithium titanate demonstrator project, a £1.5M EPSRC-funded TransEnergy project investigating railway storage, and leadership of a Horizon 2020 project to install Europe’s largest hybrid flywheel-battery system.
