The UK is a very beautiful place!

It has always been my dream to study in a multicultural country. The UK is a great option since it has lots of great universities with great quality of education. Also, the UK is a very beautiful place! I have always loved the idea of a small city and nature, and Sheffield offers both! It has everything that every student needs. Sheffield University Management School has Triple Crown accreditation and a great reputation, and not forget to mention that its Students Union is number 1 in the UK!

I wanted to gain skills for my future career

I come from a hospitality background and didn’t have a strong foundation in this field. MSc Management is the best option for me because it is a course that is suitable for any student from any background. After spending four years in Taiwan studying hotel management, I wanted to step out from my comfort zone and learn something new. I also wanted to gain new skills for my future career path.

Moving to Sheffield did bring concerns with it - but I settled in quickly

At first I was concerned with a lot of things - mostly about moving to Sheffield. Also, I was worried about how to get to know people here, especially people who are studying the same course as me. The University made several group chats for students to get to know each other before arriving in Sheffield, and I found this very helpful. The student ambassadors also helped a lot by answering questions about any enquiries in the chats. In addition to joining the group chats, I also took part in both orientation and intro week to get familiar with the university environment and my department.

I have met amazing people on my course!

My course is great! I have met amazing people and my coursemates are really nice. We are all from different backgrounds previously (engineering, food science, computer science, etc.) The modules are also well-taught and the professors and tutors are very helpful.

Through my degree, I am developing my ability to express my thoughts and ideas to others. I'm also strengthening my ability to work in teams and interact with different people from different backgrounds.

I am developing my communication skills through volunteering

I started volunteering at the Sunday Centre, and it is an amazing and meaningful experience. The Sunday Centre is a charity based in the centre of Sheffield which serves homeless and vulnerable people in the city. Through this volunteering I have gained interpersonal skills and developing skills in communicating with different people - I have made new friends as well! This is important for my future career because I will be required to communicate more and adapt to any kinds of situations.

My advice for future students

Put yourself out there and meet new people. It doesn’t matter if you’re an introvert or extrovert, there’s always something for everyone and you’ll find many students that are in the same boat as you!

Engage in as many activities as possible to gain new skills.

There is always people to help you, so if you’re struggling, seek help!
