Applying to study in the Department of Philosophy
The Sheffield Philosophy Department warmly welcomes students from all over the world!
We take applications to our undergraduate courses through UCAS.
You may want to visit us whilst writing your application. The University Open Days take place during June—October. Book a place so that you can see our department, see the University and its facilities, find out about your accommodation, and get a sense of Sheffield as a city.
You can visit us again if we make you an offer. Our open days for offer holders are in December, February, March and April. You’ll find out more about the course you’ve applied for, have some short sample lectures, and meet staff and current students. You will also be able to discuss your application with our staff.
If you’re outside the UK, and unable to make it to an open day, it may be possible to meet with one of our international officers in your country. Overseas visit dates
Students studying in the USA or Canada
If you are currently studying in the USA or Canada, we can accept an application from you through the Common Application. However, if you able to apply through UCAS we would encourage you to choose this route. You can only apply through one of the Common Application or UCAS, not both. Please note that we are not able to consider Common Applications from students studying outside the USA or Canada.
If you’re considering one of our MA programmes, you’re welcome to visit us on one of our MA Open Days. You can also discuss your application with the Department before you submit it.
If you’re thinking of applying to our PhD programme, you’re invited to discuss your application with a potential supervisor before submitting it. You are also welcome to visit the Department to chat to staff in person, or attend the postgraduate or departmental research seminars.
If you are applying to our MA or PhD programmes from outside the UK, you may be able to meet with one of our international officers in your country. Overseas visit dates
You can also book a place on one of our Virtual Open Days.
You will need to provide a writing sample (PhD applications only), and a record of your academic achievement. You will also need reference letters from two referees, who should send them directly to the Department.
