Research Associate in Video Analytics and Surveillance for Rail Networks
Salary: Grade 7 £31,302 - £39,609 per annum.

We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate to contribute within the Department of Automatic Control and System
Engineering. The position is associated with the EU Shift2Rail programme In2Stempo (research into Safety Management in
Public Areas) which runs from 1 September 2017 to 31 August 2022. We are seeking a Research Associate who will work
actively on video analytics and surveillance methods as part of the In2Stempo project.
Advanced security and surveillance methods have been implemented in other sectors (e.g. airports), and have a different
level of maturity. Sensor data fusion approaches and technologies that are able to cover well rail network areas will be
considered which will provide insight into the patterns of motion and passenger behaviour. Detection of individuals in
forbidden areas or individuals who loiter in one place will be also considered. Technical specifications and guidance will be
produced relating to security threat detection and assessment. The project also aims to develop a demo for certain case
studies. The demo will also show monitoring of the density of the passengers in certain areas and this will be linked with
indicators showing that safety might be endangered. The task will provide an overview of best practices for security CCTV
surveillance aimed to detect abnormal activities in rail network areas.
You will hold a MEng/MSc/PhD (or have equivalent experience) in engineering, applied mathematics sciences, signal
processing, electrical engineering or in another relevant discipline, which will provide the skills required for the research. A
background in experimental research is essential, as is knowledge of probabilistic machine learning methods, video analytics
