Bioengineering academic staff

An interdisciplinary team with a wealth of experience in teaching and research.

Our courses are interdisciplinary which means that you'll be taught by academic experts from across the Faculty of Engineering, but also fellow lecturers from within the University. This includes academics from the School of Mathematics and Statistics, the Management School, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health. Here are just some of the staff who play a key role in the running and teaching of the course.

Lecturer and Lab Lead

Year 2: Design and Manufacturing

Dr Pete Mylon is an academic from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Having started as a teacher of Dynamics labs and academic liaison for Advanced Manufacturing, Pete developed the design and build curriculum, introducing new courses in manufacturing, sketching and CAD. Alongside a team of students, Pete founded the iForge makerspace in The Diamond, the first truly student-led makerspace in the UK.

Dr Vanessa Hearnden, Lecturer

Vanessa Hearnden

Lecturer in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering

Year 2: Biology and Chemistry of Living Systems II
Year 3: Scientific Writing

Vanessa Hearnden joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 2015 as Lecturer in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. Vanessa’s undergraduate degree was in Biomedical Science; she then obtained her PhD in Tissue Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 2011. Dr Hearnden previously worked as a post doc in the Medical School and School of Clinical Dentistry where she gained experience of both lab based studies and clinical research. Dr Hearnden is currently chair of the White Rose Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Group (BiTEG) and on the committee for the Tissue and Cell Engineering Society (TCES).

Dr Andrzej NowakowskiRole
Employability Lead, Lecturer

Year 2: Aerodynamic Design
Year 3: Fundamental Biomechanics

Andrew's research interests are in the area of aerodynamics, multi-component and multi-phase flows. In all these categories, the work aims to construct the algorithms for determining approximate solutions of relevant flow problems. Then, numerical methods are analysed and computer codes implementing the algorithms are developed, first for the purpose of showing the efficacy of the discretization methods and ultimately, to solve problems of practical interest.
