Rob Dwyer-Joyce

Professor Rob Dwyer-Joyce has been awarded the Silver Medal by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.  This is a national award, given in recognition of an exceptionally meritorious contribution to the science and technology of tribology.

Professor Dwyer-Joyce joined our Department of Mechanical Engineering as a lecturer in 1994 when he re-established a research group in tribology.  He is now Director of the Leonardo Centre for Tribology at the University of Sheffield, working alongside a number of academic staff, PHD students and research assistants.  Since 1994, he has published over 160 papers in international journals and holds 6 patents.  His academic and research achievements demonstrate a commitment to his field and are indicative of the influence which he has had over so many during his career to date.

On receiving his award Rob commented: “I am pleased to receive this honour from the Tribology Trust.  Dr Peter Jost founded the trust some 50 years ago and I am proud to see my name alongside the illustrious past medal winners. Peter helped us found the Leonardo Centre for Tribology in 2008 and in the centre I have had the privilege to work alongside great colleagues, researchers and most importantly, PhD students. All of us are passionate about tribology, curious about interfaces, and determined to translate our findings into industry."

We congratulate Rob on this additional recognition and agree that he is a worthy winner of the 2021 Tribology Silver Medal.
